Organization Overview
United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is an independent, scientific
nonprofit organization focused on building trust in the supply of safe, quality medicines.
The organization also works to strengthen the global supply chain so that the drugs
that people rely on for health are available when needed and work as expected. USP
has always been, and continues to be, an incubator for research and standardization of
medicines, setting rigorous science and public quality standards to help ensure quality
in medicines — all to improve patient care and health outcomes.
USP conducts cutting-edge research in various areas, such as advanced analytical
methods for material characterization and testing on pharmaceutical, excipient, food,
biologic, and dietary supplement/herbal medicine materials, with a long history and
experience in developing and administering programs to support research and
innovation. USP possesses scientific expertise and capabilities in multiple locations,
including our headquarters in Rockville, MD (analytical development lab and reference
standards lab) and in Richmond, VA (advanced manufacturing lab) to support quality,
and safety and to strengthen the supply chain resilience of medicines for patients in the
U.S. and around the world.
