Dr. Heather Richter is an environmental health scientist whose career is focused on bringing together cutting-edge data science (such as machine learning working with large, multi-modal data sets) with community-led research that emphasizes qualitative, ethnographic approaches to engage community members in setting research priorities as well as in interpreting study findings and developing successful interventions. Consequently, she is passionate about promoting diversity and inclusion in science leadership, both as a professional who has experienced exclusion and as an advocate for community engagement in that leadership.

As Interim Director of the Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium (HRBRC), a 501(c)(3) organization based in Norfolk, VA, that prominently includes community organizations and members, Dr. Richter involves multiple partners in developing initiatives to accelerate scientific research and advance bio health innovation in eastern Virginia that emphasize health equity — with respect to who is leading the projects as well as the populations from which data is obtained and solutions targeted.

Her leadership at HRBRC focuses on building strategic partnerships among academic institutions, healthcare providers, industry partners, and communities, with proven success from NIH and other funding sources.

As Co-Director at ACES, Dr. Richter is at the forefront of applying high-performance computing to community-based environmental and health studies. Her multidisciplinary expertise spans biomedical sciences, ethnography, research administration, and science education, significantly contributing to groundbreaking discoveries and their broad application in clinics, classrooms, communities, and policymaking.
